2026 District 1 Campaign
Why You Should Vote for Tyler Powell
You should vote for Tyler for school board because he would bring genuine engagement, real-world understanding, and a service-first mindset to Duchesne County School District. Tyler calls the Uintah Basin home, without being one of the "good ol' boys." Tyler is already present at school board meetings, thoroughly reviews policy before meetings, asks thoughtful questions, and actively listens to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members. With close family members who are dedicated DCSD educators, he understands both the successes and the challenges happening in our classrooms. Tyler believes in responsible oversight of taxpayer dollars, supporting good teachers, and building well-rounded education that prepares students for the future while honoring the values of our communities. He isn’t running with a personal agenda—he’s running to do good, to listen, and to strengthen education for every student in every school in Duchesne County School District.
The students, teachers, and parents of Duchesne County School District deserve the best. That starts with more engaged members of the school board. Engagement needs to be shown by being present, alert, and attentive at school board meetings, as well as asking questions and thoroughly reviewing policy before acting upon it. School board members should also be in our schools, talking to students, teachers, and administrators, more than just when required or expected to be.
While the school board primarily creates district policy, responsible oversight is still needed. In today’s economy, our tax dollars must be used with the most benefit to our students, and be fully available to the teachers that use it. The utmost efficiency without sacrificing educational quality.
I have a desire to serve the students, teachers, administrators, parents, and shareholders of Duchesne County School District (DCSD). I want to help create and rework policy that will help build students with a well-rounded education that will in turn fill and meet the needs in our future workforce, while still maintaining the traditional values of our communities. I want to help our professional teachers and educators fulfill the visions and goals that they have in their classrooms. They are the real mentors and builders of our future, and they know how to prepare our students to fulfill their potential in the real world.
In short, I am not running with an agenda, but with the intent to do good and to support and improve education in Duchesne County.
Currently, when I am able I help my wife with her after school undertakings. This includes attending and filming her after school concerts, helping her and her students backstage, and fulfilling the vital role of errand boy.
I have also been a regular attendee at monthly school board meetings since April 2025.* I always thoroughly read the agenda items before the meeting, and if I have questions I ask board members or district faculty and staff for their insight and opinions to increase my understanding. Often, I am the only individual not employed by the district or not currently on the board left at the meeting’s end. Before the board meetings begin, I have the opportunity to talk to and engage with teachers, parents, community members, and occasionally students. Attending regularly has helped me to understand the needs of our community, what the district is currently doing well at, and where it can improve. I have also begun learning the processes for creating, working, and reworking district policy.
Something I have very much enjoyed doing is visiting one on one with district staff, school administrators, teachers, current and past school board members, and former board candidates. When simply asked, many are eager to share their expertise and insights with me, and answer my questions. I typically ask these individuals to give me twenty to thirty minutes of their time, and more often than not, they give me more than an hour of their valuable time.
*I did not attend the meeting held on July 31, 2025, due to work responsibilities.
I will be an engaged and participating member of the school board, concerned with what is said and done at school board meetings, both during the working, public, and executive portions. I will read and analyze policy changes and listen to learn from those with differing opinions to do what I know will be best for our students, teachers, staff, parents, and other shareholders. I will be respectful to other board members and to those presenting to the board.
I will take time to be in the schools to further my own understanding of the concerns of parents and students, the problems and challenges that teachers are facing, and to support the solutions that are working. I will be approachable for students, teachers, staff, administration, parents, and other shareholders. Being approachable is important, but something that is said by every candidate for a board or political position. I will be there listening to understand, not listening to respond, and I will make various methods available to contact me. I will visit with and talk to teachers, parents, and administrators. You will see me in the community and at school events. I also plan to regularly visit with school administrators and district staff, including the Superintendent, regularly to discuss issues, solutions, and district goals.
I will be an available resource for education in Duchesne County. I will not be fulfilling my own agenda or supporting only one program within the district or in one school.
I will:
Actively attend and participate in board meetings.
Read and analyze policy changes and financial information.
Meet regularly with the Superintendent.
Be in our schools.
Listen to concerns and ideas from teachers, staff, parents, students, administrators, and community members - you.
Some of Tyler's Concerns in DCSD
A lack of student and parent accountability for bullying and chronic-absenteeism.
High turnover and low morale of teachers.
A lack of recognition and awards for teachers based on education.
The School Board primarily sets policies for the district and also oversees its budget, curriculum, and leadership. It also hires and evaluates the superintendent to ensure alignment with community and educational goals.
A few of the School Board's powers and duties include:
"does all things necessary for the maintenance, prosperity and success of the schools and for the promotion of education".
"Adopt such policies, regulations, and bylaws as the Board deems proper for the operation of the Board and for the control and management of the District's schools."
"Establish tax rates each year and submit the proposed rate to the county legislate body in which the District is located according to statutory procedures."
"Acquire and hold real and personal property in the name of the District".
"Exercise the right of eminent domain to acquire property."
"Employ by contract a Superintendent, Business Administrator, Principal(s), teacher(s), or other executive officer(s) and set salary schedules therefor."
